Strategies for Finding Remote Jobs in Global Companies
Application platforms, visa processes, and things to consider for those who want to work remotely abroad.
Break the Boundaries: Open Up to the World from Home
Considering exchange rates and global career opportunities, working "remotely" for companies abroad from Turkey is more attractive than ever. So, how do you reach a startup in Silicon Valley or a technology giant in Berlin from your home in Istanbul?
1. Search on the Right Platforms
Classic career sites (Kariyer.net, standard LinkedIn ads) are usually for local jobs. For global remote jobs, focus on these platforms:
- We Work Remotely: The oldest and most popular remote job posting site.
- RemoteOK: A great resource for developers and designers.
- FlexJobs: Offers paid but very high-quality, filtered ads.
- LinkedIn (Filtering): Type "Remote" in the location section, and select "Worldwide" or your target region (e.g., "European Economic Area") in the country section.
2. English Resume is Mandatory (But Not Enough)
It goes without saying that your CV must be in English. However, not only the language but also the format must be at global standards.
- Don't include a photo (US/UK companies may discard CVs with photos due to bias/discrimination laws).
- Never write personal data such as date of birth, marital status, or ID number.
- State your location as "Istanbul, Turkey (Open to Remote / Willing to Relocate)."
3. Time Zone Awareness
In advertisements, you usually see expressions like "Remote - US Only" or "Remote - GMT +/- 3."
- If the company says "US Only," it is probably looking only for people living in the US for tax/legal reasons. Don't waste time applying.
- For companies that want "time zone overlap," state in your cover letter that you can adapt to flexible working hours.
4. Contract and Payment Types (Contractor vs Employee)
From Turkey, there are usually two models when working abroad:
- B2B Contractor: You invoice the company. You need to establish a sole proprietorship in Turkey. You pay the tax to Turkey. This is the most common model.
- EOR (Employer of Record): Intermediary institutions such as Deel or Remote.com hire you legally in Turkey and employ you on behalf of the company abroad. Your social security and tax are paid through this intermediary institution.
5. Position Yourself as a "Global Citizen"
In your profile, talk about your international experiences (if any), your English level, and your cultural fit, not just local projects. Communication is the most critical competency of remote work. Emphasize in interviews how much importance you give to async (non-synchronous) communication and written documentation.
Take the First Step
A global career may seem intimidating, but it's not impossible with the right strategy. Thousands of people have achieved this, and so can you.
